New Zealand Weddings Show Backstage Diary

We loved being part of the New Zealand Weddings Magazine Show at New Zealand Fashion Week this year, and today we bring you a few backstage snaps of how our days went while we were backstage dressing models and preparing our collection for the catwalk!

Models Rebecca, Sophie and Ariel in our latest designs. Pre-show its important for designers to hold fittings with models so we can allocate gowns to the girls that are best showcased for each individual figure.

Designers often have show cards with all of the information of the outfit that each model is to wear, this ensures things run smoothly on the day and helps backstage volunteers get an idea of how the gown is to be styled.

Hair and makeup is vital in helping to tell the story of the whole look. The team from Bobbi Brown and Joico did a wonderful job.

Rebecca showcased the finale outfit in our capsule collection, this is of course usually reserved for the most standout look, which we thought appropriate for this bold veil and gown which featured a three metre long train!

    Diary of a Dress

Here at Natalie Chan HQ we take great pride in precious craftsmanship through creating all of our designs be it dresses or head wear, in house. This means the entire process from designing to pattern drafting to cutting, sampling, and constructing is all completed by our dedicated team of fashion trained staff in our (ever so cosy, but at times rather cramped!) atelier above the boutique.

Having showcased at the New Zealand Weddings Collection at New Zealand Fashion week this year, we bring you an exclusive behind the scenes snippet at the process of creating one of our new couture bridal designs.

Our catwalk collection was inspired by blooms and botanical gardens, each design in the collection features a type of fabric flower from petite and scattered to a bold cluster of blooms. To capture the vivid colours of real flowers we researched into painting large scale flowers onto silk fabric in various forms, from directly onto gowns or cutting out the blooms and hand appliqueing them onto designs. Our friend Aric who is a wonderful photographer visited us in our atelier to capture the creating of one of our designs.

    Rendering the illustration.

Mixing paints to our desired palette.

    Paintbrush to fabric!

    It's all in the details.

Multiple flowers were each and individually hand cut.

The base of the dress in a beautiful corded lace is being sewn up.

Our hand created flowers being pinned before appliqueing onto the dress.

    And here we have it!

The 'Tumbling Flowers' ensemble is made up of a lace top and coordinating skirt which is adorned with beautiful blooms. We think its simply perfect for a playful bride who is after a charming look for her special day!

In conjunction with the release of the new bridal gowns in the 'Yours Ethereally' capsule collection and the smaller collection of ‘pick and mix’ bridal separates is also of course millinery. The millinery follows in the same ethereal suit; this season sees the new additions of charm and pearl beaded hair wreaths in gold and silver and hair-combs embellished with jewels, these sit alongside classics such as tulle veils and crystal texture headpieces.

    'Yours Ethereally' Bridesmaids

In conjunction with the release of the new bridal gowns in the 'Yours Ethereally' capsule collection, comes a smaller collection of ‘pick and mix’ bridal separates. The premise is simple; you select one bodice design from three options, to co-ordinate with a tulle skirt of your preferred hemline (knee, calf, or floor-length) and in rose pink, grey or ivory. Styled with luxurious cashmere and dainty headbands these timeless and romantic bridesmaids styles complement a Natalie Chan Bride in the most charming way.
